Two families receive keys to their new homes, thanks to Habitat for Humanity

Two hard working families received keys to their new homes on Cowdy Street thanks to a program of Habitat for Humanity – Kingston Limestone Region.

It was a very emotional moment for both of the families. Nathan Lovelace was receiving the keys to one of the homes with his wife Virginia and two kids, Nathaniel and Cody. “Overwhelming, really really overwhelmed. I was shocked, I couldn’t believe it, we open up the door, I looked at my boys and wife and said here we go,” says Lovelace.

The Moedt family also received keys to their new home.

The Lovelace and Moedt families applied to be considered for a home about a year ago.

Moedt had always dreamt of owning a home, but “being a recently single mother, I didn’t think that was going to be possible.”

The Lovelace and Moedt families helped build their homes from the foundation to its full fruition.

Both families volunteered 500 hours of sweat “equity” toward their new homes. Their friends and families helped them with these hours.

They will also be putting 30 per cent of their earnings monthly towards their mortgage. A portion of the money will then be used to help other families build their homes.

“So what they are doing is paying it forward for the next Habitat family,” says Resource Development Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity, Chris Catry.

The Lovelace and Moedt families are very grateful for Habitat for Humanity.

Moedt says, “I can’t thank everybody enough, thank you everybody for all the work that you’ve put into this house.”

The Lovelace family was emotional and also very thankful for this experience. “To them, a thank you means a lot, but to me, it doesn’t, it’s not enough, but all I can say is thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

The Lovelace and Moedt families started this journey by sharing a dream of a peaceful place to call home, and now they will live that dream. All while sharing a single wall, in their new semi-detached homes.
