Cellphones not allowed in Martensville elementary school classrooms

A principal from a school north of Saskatoon says he’s getting calls from colleagues across Saskatchewan about his school’s cellphone ban.

Ron Biberdorf said Venture Heights Elementary School in Martensville started the push against cellphones in class last fall, mainly focusing on the Grade 8 students.

Biberdorf said other principals in the province have been asking for the research they’ve used, or for the correspondence they’ve been sending to parents.

He said the community’s high school doesn’t allow phones, either, so it’s a good way to prepare the students going into Grade 9.

Students are welcome to bring their phones to school with them, but they have to be kept in lockers during the day.
