The Kingston community came out to the “Shave for the Brave” event Sunday to show their support to Nicole Welch, who’s been battling ovarian cancer for four years. Some attendees got as much as 10 inches chopped off and others got their heads shaved with designs dedicated to Welch.
The fundraiser was held to help Welch raise money for her next trip to Newfoundland this summer, to attend a YACC support retreat.
Welch has been involved with YACC, Young Adult Cancer Canada, a support group that invites 18 – 39-year-old individuals to support them through their tough journey as they fight cancer.
YACC holds retreats and conferences for young adults who are battling cancer every year.
“We’ve had a really good turnout. The support and love… Kingston has been amazing. I just want to say ‘thank you’ for that,” Welch said.
She hopes this fundraising event will also inspire other young adults battling cancer to learn more about support groups like YACC.
“Maybe some other young people that are out there that are battling cancer, it’s good for them to know about the support group that’s out there because they are amazing.”
