42 distracted drivers ticketed by Saskatoon police

Members of the Saskatoon police traffic unit spent part of Wednesday afternoon catching distracted drivers on Idylwyld Drive.

Officers were set up at the corner of Idylwyld and 38th Street where they used a variety of tactics to catch drivers on their cellphones.

The blitz was part of SGI’s traffic safety spotlight focusing on distracted driving, which is the second-leading cause of fatal collisions on Saskatchewan roads and the number one overall cause of collisions.

“In 2016, distracted driving was the number two factor in fatal collisions. Forty-two people lost their lives as a result of collision in which distracted driving was a factor,” SGI spokesperson Tyler McMurchy said.

“It was the number on cause of collisions overall and the number one cause of injuries related to traffic collisions.”

A total of 42 people were ticketed for distracted driving during the afternoon blitz, which carries a fine of $280 along with four demerit points.
