Nanaimo RCMP arrest suspect after hitting him with police car

Nanaimo RCMP say a 33-year-old suspect suffered minor injuries after he was struck by a police car just after 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, before being taken into custody.

A release said an officer approached the man, who was arrestable for breaching conditions, to tell him he was under arrest.

The statement said that when he did so, the man pulled out a knife and threatened to kill the officer, and then fled in the opposite direction.

The release said the officer who had previous violent encounters with the suspect before, pursued him with his gun drawn.

The release continues to say another officer arrived not long after and took many factors into consideration, “which included his safety, the safety of nearby children and any unsuspecting pedestrians, decided to strike the male, at low speed,” with the front end of his cruiser near Beban Park.

After the suspect was struck by the police vehicle and taken into custody, he was treated in the hospital, and taken to the RCMP detachment.

The man faces several charges, including breaching his conditions, possession of a weapon, and uttering threats.
