A Port Moody man has received a sentence of 18 years in prison for setting a house fire in 2016 that killed his wife.
The man, who cannot be named due to a publication ban, gets a credit of two-and-a-half years for time served.
Emergency crews were called to the home at approximately 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 10, 2016, for a domestic dispute. When they arrived, they found the residence engulfed in flames. Two adults were still inside the home and police were able to retrieve the pair.
According to police, the woman was found inside the home suffering from extensive burns to her body. She was taken to hospital but later died of her injuries on Sunday night. Her husband was arrested at the scene.
The couple had multiple children. All but one of their children were at home during the dispute and fire. With the help of neighbours, the children were able to escape the fire from the second storey and get to safety before the first responders were on scene.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called in and the husband was charged with second-degree murder.
One of the children set up a GoFundMe to help them move on following the tragedy as they were concerned insurance would deny their claim as their father was charged with arson.
It is unclear at this time what happened with the insurance claim.
