Peterborough man charged with assault, forcible confinement

A Peterborough man is facing charges including assault with a weapon and forcible confinement following an altercation on Friday night.

Police say the victim was at the home of a man he knows. It was reported the man brandished a knife, threatened the victim and prevented him from leaving the house.

“He assaulted the victim and struck him with a vacuum cleaner,” stated police spokesperson Lauren Gilchrist.

The victim was able to leave the residence the next morning and called police.

Officers located a suspect in the area of McDonnel Street where he was arrested and charged.

Robert James Ward, 49, of Rubidge Street, is charged with assault, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts of failure to comply with a probation order.

He was held in custody and appeared in weekend and statutory holiday court on Saturday.
