Students from across the province were in Saskatoon Sunday, for a little bit of friendly competition.
The First Nations Provincial Spelling Bee (FNPSB) celebrated its third year.
Held at St. Kateri Tekakwitha School, roughly 120 participants from 23 different First Nations travelled to Saskatoon for the one-day competition.
Organizers said the event is all about building student engagement, and lifelong learning for Aboriginal youth.
“They’re studying vocabulary words – challenging vocabulary words. They are learning public speaking skills. There are so many benefits,” FNPSB president Pauline Favel said.
Bethy Windigo, from Muskowekwan School, won the primary category. Junior and intermediate winners were Sierra Crookedneck and Ashlyn Durocher respectively, who both take classes at Canoe Lake Miksiw School.
The first-place winners in the three age categories will take part in the Spelling Bee of Canada held in Toronto on May 6.
McKenna Fineblanket was the first-ever Indigenous youth to place at nationals last year.
