Officials to begin demolition at Fairview Arena, inspections at other arenas underway

WATCH: Global News coverage of the City of Calgary's response to a roof collapse at the Fairview Arena in February.

The City of Calgary is looking at demolishing parts of the Fairview Arena as part of its investigation into a roof collapse at the facility last month.

The roof of the arena, which is attached to the Fairview Community Centre, completely collapsed on Feb. 20.

According to the city, in order to safely investigate the building and cause of the collapse, crews have to take down anything that is still at risk of collapsing.

The arena, which was built in 1972, had been evacuated the night before after officials were made aware of a “small structural issue,” according to a letter sent to arena users.

Following that collapse, the city announced last Friday plans to inspect up to 50 civic arenas, prioritizing arenas that were of the same age and typology as the Fairview facility.

At the time, it was hoped officials would complete those inspections by Friday, March 2.

In a Friday update, manager of building regulations Marco Civitarese said inspections of 20 of the approximately 40 arenas they’re attending to will be completed by end of day.

“No threats to public safety have been found,” Civitarese said.

Civitarese said officials are focusing on arenas that were built the 1960s to the 1980s.
