Tears were wiped away from dozens of eyes at Olympic Plaza Sunday afternoon as Calgarians came out to rally for justice for Tina Fontaine.
The 15-year-old’s body was found in Winnipeg’s Red River in 2014, wrapped in plastic and a duvet cover and weighed down with rocks.
The man accused of killing her, Raymond Cormier, was found not guilty of second-degree murder on Thursday.
Marches and rallies have taken place across the country demanding justice for Fontaine and other missing and murdered Indigenous people in Canada.
“A modern form of genocide is happening here,” said Lowa Beebe, who organized the Calgary rally.
“Our children are dying every day and people are getting away with it. I’m wondering, where is the justice?”
