‘He can’t get out, so I’ll have to go in’: Woman braves icy Vancouver lake to save dog

A woman is being hailed as a hero after braving the icy waters of Vancouver’s Trout Lake on Friday to rescue a dog that had fallen through the ice.

Twitter user Ben West was walking his own dog in the park when it happened, and captured the dramatic scene on video.

“This is the most amazing thing I have ever seen with my own eyes,” West wrote in an Instagram post.

“A dog went out on the ice and fell through at Trout Lake and without hesitating this woman went out in the water, breaking the ice with her hands and rescued the dog!”

West happened to be filming when the dog walked out on the ice, and spotted it when broke through the thin crust covering the lake.

“Oh my god! That dog is in the water,” he can be heard yelling as other dog owners run to the edge of the lake.

“He can’t get out, so I’ll have to go in,” the Good Samaritan can be heard saying before stepping through the ice and wading into the frigid water, cracking the ice in front of her by hand.

The woman makes her way into the middle of the lake with icy water up to her chest, while people on shore call to the dog.

Eventually, the woman is able to grab the dog and pull it back to shore.

West said woman was taken to a nearby home, where people drew her a hot bath to heat her up, and that paramedics were called to treat her.
