Wrestler Michelle Fazzari named Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year

Hamilton wrestler Michelle Fazzari has won the Bill Sturrup Award as the Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year for 2017.

Fazzari edged McMaster basketball star Danielle Boiago and national racquetball champion Mike Green for the honour.

Fazzari won a gold medal in the women’s 58-kilogram category at the 2017 Canadian Championships in St. Catharines and followed that up with a gold at the 2017 Pan-American Wrestling Championships in Brazil.

Fazzari, 30, also won bronze at the Senior World Championships in Paris last August, posting a 3-1 record.

She will compete in the Commonwealth Games, which begins April 4 in Gold Coast, Australia.

Boiago was named USports Female Basketball Player of the Year in 2017, while Green is the current Canadian men’s singles racquetball champion.
