Another brick in the mall – Lego comes to Southgate

EDMONTON – Fans of Lego are falling to pieces after discovering that the toy company is opening a store in Edmonton this spring.

“There’s a lot of happiness and there’s a lot of concern over our wallets,” said Chris Gray, of the Northern Alberta Lego Users Group, whose members create massive projects out of the plastic bricks. Gray and another member built a model of the Alberta Legislature on display at the building’s interpretive centre.

Southgate Centre confirmed on Twitter Tuesday that a Lego Store is opening at the southside mall.

“We’re so excited to announce the newest addition to Southgate! @LEGO_Group is coming to #YEG in late spring!” Southgate tweeted.

It’s the second outlet in Alberta, as Lego opened in 2010 at Calgary’s Chinook Centre.

Although Lego kits are available at other retailers, Gray said one of the attractions of a Lego store is that it sells loose bricks and pieces in bulk.

“You basically buy those parts by volume of the cup. This can be for the less common pieces, a very good way to get them in large quantities,” Gray said.

Lego has said that it looks at where Lego fans are located before opening a store in a market.

The company is aware of the club’s activities, Gray said.

“They know there is a good market for Lego in Edmonton.”
