Members of the Canadian Association of Pensioners (CARP) met with local MP Mark Garretson on Tuesday.
The meeting was held in advance of National Day of Action being held tomorrow.
There were about 15 seniors at the meeting who voiced concerns about several large corporations, like Bell and Sears, cutting their pension payments.
“Companies in Canada are allowed to go totally bankrupt and leave pensioners underfunded and when we talk about pensioners, we’re not only talking about the monthly pension that you would be getting but more often than not, you’re also getting dental and health benefits which quite often as I understand it in the case of Sears, they got that totally cancelled on them,” says Kevin Bennett, a member of Canadian Association of Pensioners.
Some former employees are now only receiving 80 per cent of what they are entitled to while others are receiving just half.
CKWS spoke with MP Mark Garretson and he says, “What we need to do is to continue talking about this so that we can encourage the government to make the necessary changes both at the provincial and federal level.”
CARP members are hoping to raise awareness on Wednesday by demanding action from Ottawa.
