A 16-year-old male student was arrested after opening fire in a Texas high school Monday morning, injuring at least one person.

Ellis County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of an active shooter at Italy High School at around 8 a.m. local time.

Video footage from the scene showed multiple police units and fire officials outside the school while students appeared to be evacuating the building.

The sheriff’s office said a 15-year-old female was injured as a result of the shooting and was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

Sgt. Joe Fitzgerald of the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office said the shots were fired inside the school’s cafeteria. The shooter was taken into custody without incident outside of the building.

Fitzgerald did not provide details of the extent of the victim’s injuries.

Italy is about 70 kilometres south of Dallas.
