A dog died in a morning house fire in Cobourg on Dec. 17 – Dec 18, 2017

A dog died in a large house fire in Cobourg, Ont., on Sunday morning.

Cobourg firefighters worked tirelessly to put out a house fire on University Avenue West which broke out before noon.

When crews got to the scene, smoke was billowing from the roof and a side window. After entering the home, they found a Border Collie/Labrador retriever mix.

Crews performed CPR and oxygen therapy on the dog, but it succumbed to its injuries.

Firefighters say the owners were not home at the time but arrived a short while later.

Investigators say the fire appeared to have started on the main floor of the building but the exact cause remains under investigation.

The fire is not deemed to be suspicious.

Damage is pegged at $200,000.
