Gas prices rose by 13 cents overnight, causing a fright for Montrealers Tuesday morning.
The price at the pump was as low as $1.20 in some areas when the week started — and many weren’t happy about the sudden change.
“I think it’s ridiculous,” said Beaconsfield resident Mike Hunter.
“I often wonder to myself: ‘Why was it, when gas was 100$ a barrel, we were paying $1.50?’ Now, it’s $50 to $56 a barrel and we’re paying $1.33. That math doesn’t add up.”
CAA-Quebec explained there is a reason for the increase.

“What we observed in the last few days is that the retail margins are kind of low for gas stations, so we believe that could be one of the reasons gas rose so much,” said CAA-Quebec spokesperson Annie Gauthier.
To deal with the increase, CAA-Quebec says there are some small things drivers can do.
“Shop for gas,” said Gauthier.
“Wait until the price goes down a bit for a better deal; but I know it’s not easy, so we have to be clever in the way we use a car.”
Some Montrealers say they’re ready to get creative.
“I go just over the border to Lancaster, in Cornwall,” said Hunter.
“I have a family member that lives there and the gas is always usually 10 cents a litre cheaper, at least.”
CAA-Quebec says for now, it looks like gas prices will remain as is.
