A shooting in Newmarket has claimed the life of one man.
York Regional Police said the incident took place near Yonge Street and Davis Drive around 9:50 p.m. on Saturday.
The victim was sent to hospital with serious injuries but died a short time later.
Police have identified the victim as 30-year-old Cody Gionet of the Town of Georgina.
Insp. Russ Bellman with York Regional Police said they have arrested two suspects but no charges have been laid.
“Police responded to a weapons call here on Sheldon Avenue in Newmarket. When they arrived, they found a 30-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds and he was taken to hospital but later pronounced deceased,” Bellman said.
Nic Tardiff lives in the residential neighbourhood and said he heard the sound of gunshots on Saturday night.
“I thought it was fireworks,” he said, but when he went outside on Sunday morning he found bullet casings in his front yard.
“I’m a little scared and worried not something you want but things happen.”
Bellman said police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
“And if people in the neighbourhood have any surveillance cameras on their houses, if they come across something, contact police.”
