Plaque in memory of Gord Downie planned at Hamilton’s First Ontario Centre

The passing of Gord Downie is being felt at Hamilton City Hall.

A motion presented by Ward 4 Councillor Sam Merulla, and approved by the General Issues Committee on Wednesday, ensures that the Tragically Hip’s lead singer will be remembered at First Ontario Centre.

The motion calls for the erection of a plaque at the arena in memory of Gord Downie.

Merulla notes that The Hip was the first musical act to ever perform back-to-back sold out shows at the former Copps Coliseum.

Merulla also insists that it was Hamilton’s positive relationship with The Hip and its agent that brought the Juno Awards to Hamilton for the first time in the 1990s.

Hamilton is bidding to host that event for the seventh time in 2019.
