Loved ones want justice on 2nd anniversary of Calgary double homicide

Friends and family of two women killed in a double homicide gathered at a Calgary cemetery Tuesday afternoon.

This week marks the tragic anniversary of the deaths of Selmawit Alem and Julie Tran. Alem, 54, was a caregiver for Tran, 25.

“The tears are every day; the anger is every day,” Alem’s best friend Susan Hills told Global News.

“Every day I miss something else. I miss her hugs…I miss the laughing…I miss her.”

Alem’s son Emanuel Kahsai is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the case.

But two years after the brutal stabbing deaths, there’s still no justice for Alem and Tran’s deaths.

The case still before the courts.

The preliminary inquiry last November came to a sudden halt when Kahsai dismissed his defence lawyer.

The case is now proceeding by direct indictment, meaning Kahsai will go straight to trial without a preliminary inquiry.

Kahsai will represent himself at the jury trial March 5 to May 4, 2018.
