Calgary police took one man into custody on Thursday afternoon after a standoff at a downtown health centre.

The man was inside a vehicle in the Sheldon M. Chumir parking lot on 12 Avenue and 4 Street S.W. and allegedly had a gun.

Members of the Calgary Police Service Tactical Unit responded to the scene but were unable to coax the man out of the vehicle.

After about an hour, police used tear gas to force him out.

Streets around the downtown health centre were blocked off as a precaution until after the situation was resolved.
