The train couldn’t halt in time, Lethbridge fire officials told Global News.

The semi truck was not carrying any hazardous material, just feed for calves.

Responders on the scene said the semi did not clear the intersection completely, which led to the collision.

“He (the driver) did say while he was sitting in the truck that he could hear the train whistle and blowing at somebody,” Lethbridge Fire Department Captain Shawn Folk said.

“He kept thinking to himself that person has to get off the track and as he found out after he got hit and clipped and knocked over, it was him. So it was just a lack of judgment on actual distance. There was no car in front of him, so he figured he had enough room.”
