Homicide investigators have identified the body found in Richmond on Tuesday as a known Surrey gang member.
The body has been identified as 30-year-old Ibrahim Amjad Ibrahim, who was known to police for years due to his gang ties.
In a release, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said that it’s too early to tell whether Ibrahim’s gang ties led directly to his death, and investigators are still working to determine the motive for the killing.
Ibrahim’s body was found in a park near Garden City Road and Granville Avenue shortly after 4:30 Tuesday morning.
Investigators say it appeared Ibrahim was shot, and that his death appears targeted.
“It is a reminder that if you are involved in or associated to criminal activity, then you are not immune to its inherent dangers,” Cpl. Frank Jang of IHIT said.
Ibrahim was one of five victims in the recent wave of targeted Surrey shootings that had refused to cooperate with police.
That prompted RCMP to issue a warning to the public to stay away from those five targets, calling them a risk to public safety.
“Each of these individuals has refused to provide information to police on these violent incidents,” Surrey RCMP Asst. Commissioner Dwayne McDonald said during a July 31 press conference.
“At this point, we must assume that these men continue to be targets and, as such, we are advising the public to be cautious of any interaction with these five individuals.”
IHIT is asking anyone who was in the area of the parking lot of Garden City Park either late Monday night or early Tuesday morning to contact police, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
