This week’s edition of High School Huddle kicks off with cross-country running at the city championships.

With over 200 runners competing, it’s one of the most popular sports in the Saskatoon Secondary Schools Athletic Directorate (SSSAD).

There was no snow this year at Lakewood Park as athletes competed for individual titles and the overall team championship.

The Walter Murray Marauders defended their title, finishing well ahead of the pack with 24 points.

The St. Joseph Guardians had 11 points and the Centennial Chargers with eight points to round out the top three.

Marauders took first place in three age divisions. The top athletes in each division will race at provincials in Turtleford, Sask., this weekend.

There were a couple of repeat champions this year. Jaira Crosschild, of the Bishop James Mahoney (BJM) Saints, captured the junior girls’ title after winning gold in the midget division in 2016.

St. Joseph Guardians’ Claire Abrey claimed her second straight senior girls’ championship.
