In 2009: NDP candidate Lana Popham defeated Liberal Robin Adair by 482 votes, 47-45%.

History & Geography: Created for the 1991 election from the larger Saanich and the Islands riding, Saanich South is a somewhat urban riding, consisting of all of Saanich that is north of McKenzie Avenue east of Highway 17, and north of the Trans-Canada west of Highway 17. The old Saanich riding went to the Social Credit Party for 40 years, but has gone to the NDP in four of the last five elections.

Candidates

Liberals-Rishi Sharma: A Liberal legislative staffer, Sharma has worked for a variety in the legislature, most recently as aide to former multiculturalism minister John Yap, who resigned in the aftermath of the ethnic memo controversy. He also worked in the media monitoring office for four years. Sharma is a 33-year resident of the Saanich Peninsula, and he and his wife are raising two young daughters.

NDP-Lana Popham: The critic for Agriculture, Popham was elected in 2009. Before entering politics, she ran her own organic vineyard, Barking Dog Vineyard, and ran a campaign to reduce disposable bag use. She was raised on Quadra Island, and graduated from UBC with a degree in urban planning.

Greens-Branko Mustafovic: A small businessman, Mustafovic was the executive chef for the Victoria school lunch program. He is a correspondent for an organic living website, and spends his spare time pursuing his passion in photography.

Conservatives-Joshua Galbraith: A graduate of Trinity Western University, Galbraith has lived in Victoria since 2005.
