Water main break in Saanich sends 10,000 gallons of water rushing into street

WATCH: It’s been an eventful Thanksgiving for residents of a Saanich neighbourhood, who awoke to find some 45,000 litres of water running down their street. Neetu Garcha reports – Oct 9, 2017

A water main break created a mess in the Victoria area Monday morning.

Ten thousand gallons of water began pouring out of a ruptured 16-inch pipe around 8 a.m. on Royal Oak Drive in Saanich.

There are some homes with localized flooding, but there is no word yet on how badly damaged the homes are in the area.

Due to the fact today is a statutory holiday, it took longer than usual for crews to arrive on scene.

The flooding has prompted police to urge the public to avoid the area until the flooding subsides.

Saanich officials predicted it will take the majority of the day to repair the pipe.

It is too early to tell what caused the break, but the problem happened in the area where a main drain was installed this summer.
