The always packed Boyce Farmers Market in Fredericton is less about last-minute preparations before big holiday feasts and more about dedicated customers with specific items in mind.
Ahead of Thanksgiving dinners hitting tables across the country, many hosts venture out to pick up the remaining ingredients needed for the big day.
While some of the several thousand farmer’s market-goers in the New Brunswick capital might fall under that heading, plenty more make it their go-to place to ensure the holiday feast is top of the line.
“I grabbed a few fresh veggies to help with the turkey,” said Nikkia Noiles who says she often stocks up at the market and makes sure Thanksgiving is no exception to the rule. “It’s almost the place to be in Fredericton on a Saturday morning.”
In addition to every type of vegetable one might want to get their hands on, one vendor says the days just before Thanksgiving and Christmas are always some of their busiest, thanks to the high quality turkeys they offer.
“They know they can come here and get a product that is GMO-free, there’s no hormones, they’re not injected with anything and the turkeys themselves run around freely,” explained Jenny Stewart of Cox and Hen Domestic Fowl.
“They know they’re going to get fresh, free-range product,” Stewart said.
For decades, they’ve brought in dozens of turkeys for market-goers, most of which are reserved long before they even set up shop for the day.
“We started the day off with over 150 turkeys, about 70 of them were spoken for,” she explained. “We bring in anywhere from 50 to 100 extra turkeys depending on the season and we typically sell out every year.”
