A 33-year-old man’s nearly two-week-long run from the law came to an end on Friday after he was taken into custody following a failed escape from police, south of Gorrie, Ont., that included him ramming a pickup truck into an OPP cruiser, Huron OPP said.

The arrest of Kyle Moore caps off an 11-day police manhunt that spanned at least five southern Ontario counties and involved several stolen vehicles beginning on Sept. 25.

According to police, a lone male entered a business along Main Street in Zurich around 3:30 a.m. that day and attempted to steal an ATV but fled in a white Ford pickup truck after he was spotted by the business’ owner.

Less than three hours later, a stolen White F-450 truck was pulled over by Wingham police near Bluevale in Huron County around 6 a.m. During the stop, the male allegedly assaulted the officer and took off in the cruiser, later crashing it into a tree on Barber Avenue North in Listowel before fleeing barefoot, police said.

Police in Hanover, Ont., say they believe the same suspect was seen several days later in their town on Sept. 29. A suspicious man carrying a gas can was spotted by an off-duty officer around 7:15 p.m. Officers attended the area and located the man but he fled on foot into a residential area through backyards. Police failed to locate the suspect but found a Ford F-250 truck that had been reported stolen by Lambton OPP.

The next morning, around 7:30 a.m., police in Hanover said they received a report of a stolen Ford Escape from a residence in the town. The vehicle was later found by Grey County OPP in Desboro, Ont., about 28 kilometres to the north.

Fast forward to Friday, where Huron OPP say the accused was spotted in a stolen Chevrolet Camaro in Clinton, Ont., around 11 a.m. The driver sped out of Clinton at a high rate of speed before officers could make contact, police said.

The Camaro was spotted not long after by Perth OPP in Atwood, Ont. The vehicle took off and was later found abandoned south of Palmerston, Ont. Shortly after, police say the accused committed a break-and-enter theft in Palmerston and stole a Dodge Ram truck. That truck was later abandoned near Brussels, Ont., as police say the accused stole another pickup truck, this time a GMC.

Several police vehicles were deployed to the area to locate the suspect, police said, and with help from an OPP aircraft, police converged on C-Line Road, south of Gorrie, for a co-ordinated takedown.

“Upon coming to a stop, the accused attempted to flee by ramming into one of the police vehicles,” said police. “Ultimately, his attempt to flee was unsuccessful. Just after 5 p.m., he was taken into custody by members from the West Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), OPP Canine and West Region Crime.”

Moore remains in custody and had a video bail hearing scheduled for Saturday. He now faces several charges stemming from Friday’s events in addition to charges from other OPP detachments.

The accused was also wanted by Sarnia police for several charges including driving while disqualified, resisting a police officer, possession of stolen property, failing to comply with probation, and failing to attend court.

Police say they are continuing to investigate, and are asking anyone with information to contact them at (519) 524-8314 or 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
