Edmonton police say it was a deadly crash early Saturday that forced the closure of the west leg of the Anthony Henday Drive southbound lanes.
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) said a 28-year-old woman was driving a Honda Odyssey in the wrong direction in the southbound lanes of the Henday at 109 Avenue. Police said at about 2:45 a.m., she hit a southbound Mercedes head-on. Another vehicle heading south hit the back of the Mercedes.
The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators are in the process of locating her family.
The driver and passenger in the Mercedes suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
All southbound lanes at Yellowhead Trail were closed for several hours while investigators combed the scene. At 11:45 a.m., police said the road was open again.
EPS said this is Edmonton’s 23rd traffic fatality of the year.
