One teenager was rushed to hospital in serious condition following a fight near Western Canada High School Thursday afternoon, Global News has confirmed.
The school principal said that student was “doing well and progressing” in a message sent to parents Friday.
Calgary police and EMS were called to the southwest Calgary school at about 12:30 p.m., during the lunch hour.
Officials from EMS said one male student suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and said another male student was treated at the scene.
The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) told Global News the students were injured in an altercation off school property behind a restaurant on 17 Avenue.
The school has sent two emails notifying parents.
“Each situation that arises requires an appropriate level of response to ensure the safety and security of students and staff,” reads the first letter signed by high school principal Martin Poirier.
“School staff is monitoring this situation closely and if necessary, we will enact other critical incident protocols or procedures.”
A second message to parents said a discussion was held in each classroom on Friday to “relay facts and provide students with an opportunity to discuss concerns and share their thoughts.” The student services department is offering support to students.
The letter also said the incident has spurred a school investigation.
Police are trying to determine how many people were involved. There’s been no word on whether charges will be laid.
