Bob Layton Editorial: Who are they?

As we continue to talk about the horrific events of last weekend, the next big event that should happen is the civic election on Oct. 16.

As various leaders call for calm and for us to not be divided, some respond that we are not the problem – that the would-be politicians should be telling us how they would make the city more secure.

In other parts of the world they block streets around major events and hotel luggage gets x-rayed.

Don’t you wish we could x-ray the minds of those running for office?

Do they truly have a better plan, or do they just need a paycheck or are they just running for a lark?

People tell me they don’t even know the candidates – they just popped up on nomination day.

Had they started door-knocking two years ago they might seem more credible.

Some have not even sent out pamphlets or put up signs. Are you just supposed to close your eyes and pick one?

Maybe we need to change the rules and have nomination day halfway through the term, when the people we elected are hung up on delayed bridges slow trains and bike lanes.
