ASIRT investigating after RCMP shoot suspect in Lloydminster

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after an RCMP officer shot a man who was allegedly attempting to flee from police in Lloydminster.

It happened Wednesday afternoon in the community on the border between Alberta and Saskatchewan.

RCMP said at approximately 4:40 p.m., officers tried to stop a vehicle as part of an investigation. Police said the suspect vehicle fled and collided with another vehicle.

Two people fled from the suspect vehicle, and one of them was caught by police after a short chase on foot. Mounties said they “engaged the second suspect and he sustained serious injuries.”

RCMP said he was taken to hospital under police guard.

ASIRT tweeted late Wednesday night that it was “investigating an officer-involved shooting earlier today in Lloydminster.” ASIRT investigates incidents involving Alberta law enforcement officers that result in injury or death as well as “serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.”

RCMP said the civilian involved in the collision was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The details of the original investigation and why police were after the suspects is not known.

Police said they continue to investigate.
