A driver who blew through a red light going 75 km/h in a 50 km/h zone while texting was one of the 1,151 “risky driving behaviours” caught during an annual school zone safety test.
CAA and Winnipeg police were watching closely around Ecole Victoria-Albert School, Lord Roberts Community School and Meadows West School Tuesday morning. Between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. they were looking for drivers who weren’t following the rules around school zones.

“September means kids are back to class and reduced school zone speed limits are back in force – but clearly, some motorists didn’t get the message,” Mike Mager, president of CAA Manitoba said.
In an hour and a half 342 drivers were spotted speeding in a 30 km/h school zone.

“School zone safety is undeniably a community responsibility,” Staff Sgt. Rob Riffle with Winnipeg police said.
Children improperly restrained in a vehicle, texting and driving, red lights being blown and buses being passed when their flashing stop signs were out were some of the things drivers were caught doing behind the wheel.
