Good news if you’re a hockey player, ice skater or parent in Surrey: work is finally getting underway on five new sheets of ice.

Work has just started on a three-sheet ice complex across from the Scott Road Skytrain station in the Bridgeview area.

Councillor Bruce Hayne says it’ll be more than just ice.

“There will be a lot of community amenities in that facility, multi-purpose rooms, walking track, outdoor play facility and things like that.”

The facility will be ready in the summer of 2019; the cost is $52-million.

“It will allow for us to attract larger events like provincials and things like that.”

Two other sheets of ice are being built on the Cloverdale fairgrounds and the existing arena on 176 St. is staying open for now.
