The Edmonton area, as well as communities to the northwest, woke up to thick fog Friday morning.
Environment Canada issued fog advisories around 8 a.m., saying near zero visibility in fog is expected or occurring over some areas.
“Thick fog has developed in and around the city of Edmonton and surrounding areas. The fog is expected to lift later this morning,” the alert said.
The advisories were dropped around 10:30 a.m.
The alert included Edmonton and the surrounding communities of St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Leduc and Spruce Grove.
It also included Camrose, Wetaskiwin, Tofield to the southeast, and to the north and west included Mayerthrope, Evansburg, Whitecourt, Edson, Fox Creek and Swan Hills. Smaller communities surrounding those are also affected.
The weather agency said travel was expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance.
