Vernon hosts one of city’s biggest events

The city of Vernon is hosting some 3,600 people from around the province who are taking part in the ’55 Plus B.C. Games’.

The 30th annual ’55 Plus B.C. Games’ got underway on Wednesday morning with competitors taking part in 27 different sports.

Participants range in age from 55 to 90 plus.

The event aims to showcase the outstanding athleticism of people 55 plus.  It also hopes to promote the benefits of leading an active, healthy lifestyle.

The four-day event is expected to have an estimated economic impact of more than $5-million for the region.

Sporting events include ice hockey, track and field, dragon boat racing, mountain bike racing, soccer and swimming.

The games take place at venues throughout Vernon, Coldstream, Armstrong and Spallumcheen.

The opening ceremonies take place Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at Kal Tire Place.
