Edmonton outdoor pool attendance more than doubles thanks to free admission

Outdoor pool attendance in Edmonton this summer was more than double what it was last year thanks to free admission.

Edmonton outdoor pools saw over 153,000 visits this summer. In 2016, Edmonton’s outdoor pools received 89,000 visits.

The City of Edmonton offered free admission to all outdoor pools this season as a way to celebrate Canada 150. Free admission started on July 1.

Queen Elizabeth pool is the only outdoor pool still open in Edmonton. It will close for the season on Sept. 17, so there are still a few days to get out and enjoy the pool.

However, temperatures in the capital region are expected to cool down Monday night and through the weekend, after Edmonton broke a temperature record on Monday.

Edmonton reached a high of 30 C on Monday afternoon. Global Edmonton meteorologist Jesse Beyer said there could be an almost 20-degree temperature drop overnight with the risk of rain.

“The rest of the week will be cool with highs in the 13-16 range right through the weekend,” Beyer said.
