DARTMOUTH – A fire damaged or destroyed nearly a dozen boats at Seamasters Marine Services in Dartmouth early Wednesday.

Eight fire trucks responded to the blaze, including a ladder truck which offered aerial support to firefighters on the ground.

A major winter storm that started the Tuesday night hampered firefighters’ efforts, forcing crews to drag equipment through accumulated snow.

Had there not been a snowstorm the damage could have been much worse, as the first person to spot flames was a snowplow operator

He called 911 immediately.

Crews arrived on the scene and quickly gained control over the blaze. But after many hours, several boats — made of plastic, metal and vinyl — continued to burn.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
