Several schools in B.C.’s Interior will not be opening today as raging wildfires continue to threaten the region.
Due to the massive Elephant Hill wildfire, the following schools will not be opening today:
- Horse Lake Elementary
- Alexis Creek
- Anahim Lake
- Dog Creek
- Tatla Lake
In addition, for schools that are opening today, school buses will not be running in areas where evacuation orders and alerts are in place so parents will be responsible for getting kids to school.
WATCH: Back to school in the fire zone
Tanya Guenther, chair of the Cariboo-Chilcotin school district, says about 300 students are not able to attend school today due to the closures.
“We do have additional counselling supports,” she says for students today.
“Things are still working on a day-to-day basis so everything will be evaluated daily and an update will be provided by 11 a.m. to make aware the families impacted by the school closures — whether schools will be opening, buses will be running, that kind of thing.”
