Montreal police rescued a one-year-old baby from a fire in Montreal’s east end Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough Thursday morning.
Residents had reported the fire to officers, who were on patrol around at 12:45 a.m.
When police arrived at the Dézéry Street apartment building, they were told the child was trapped alone inside the second-floor unit, where the fire had started.
“The officers had to crawl through the apartment due to the thick smoke,” said Montreal police spokesperson Manuel Couture.
“They found the baby, who was in distress, and they were able to extract the child.”
Police then evacuated all other residents from the building, knocking down some doors.

Eight police officers and the baby were treated onsite for smoke inhalation.

The fire is being treated as accidental, but a 49-year-old woman was arrested on the scene for warrants related to prior charges.
Police say she was supposed to be babysitting the child and were expecting prosecutors to bring forward charges of criminal negligence on Friday.
The baby and four of the police officers were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
