A 19-year-old man is facing drug charges after it is believed he sold lethal MDMA to a 16-year-old girl who died from an overdose.

New Westminster police say Muhammed Chambas is facing one count of trafficking a controlled substance.

Sgt. Andrew Perry said criminal charges and jail time are the first steps in preventing drugs from killing more people.

“We’re absolutely pleased with the investigation, the results, and now that we have charge approval, we’re one step closer to the goal which is a conviction in this matter.”

Perry added investigators are still determining if there are links between this death and last month’s MDMA overdose death of a 13-year-old girl.

“Are we alive to the fact that they could be linked and we should be looking into whether or not there’s links to this? Absolutely. But unfortunately, I can’t say that at this point in time.”

A different man has been arrested by New Westminster police after allegedly selling the 13-year-old girl MDMA at the 22nd Street SkyTrain Station on July 15.

Chambas is due in court on Sept. 6.
