RCMP are investigating after a teen was found seriously injured in Wetaskiwin and later died.
Police responded to a plaza in the area of 5220 48 Avenue at around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, where they found the teenage boy. His death has been deemed suspicious.
Not long after, a man was found in front of the RCMP detachment with non-life threatening injuries. He was taken to hospital and remains in police custody.
Police tape and evidence markers were still up around the area of the plaza Friday morning.
RCMP said they are not searching for any other suspects.
The Major Crimes Unit is also investigating.
Mark McFaul lives beside the alley and said he was watching television when he heard some noise from below.
“I started hearing some screaming and yelling, what I would perceive as fighting, from a guy and girl outside,” he said.
“Then I heard some higher shrills. Because we overlook the alley, I got up and went out on the balcony and had a look. But I [didn’t see anything].”
McFaul said he did not think much of it at the time because the alleyway is a common thoroughfare for people to walk through and it can often be rowdy. But then he heard police sirens.
“They stopped by the alley. Another cruiser is going down the block. Another is going down the alley. I thought, okay, something is happening.”
McFaul said it is disheartening to hear there was a death so close to where he lives.
“We’ve had some break-ins in the last week, stuff stolen from our car in the last week – this just seems to be the icing on the cake.”
