According to Health Canada, an “unauthorized product” labelled as a herbal product contains synthetic cannabinoids and is being sold in Edmonton.

Synthetic cannabinoids are man-made chemicals that mimic the effects of cannabis. Despite the fact that they are often labelled “not for human consumption” they are often smoked for the cannabis-like effect.

In a release Thursday, the agency warned about a product, called Brainfreeze Potpurri or Brainfreeze Herbal Incense, that is being sold in tobacco stores and head shops in Edmonton. The product may also be purchased online.

There are serious health concerns if someone were to inhale or ingest synthetic cannabinoids including vomiting, chest pain, increased heart rate, vision blackouts, headaches, kidney damage, agitation, high blood pressure and psychosis.

So far, one report of a “serious adverse reaction” has been reported to Health Canada.

Anyone who has purchased one of the above products is encouraged to throw it out immediately. It is illegal for products to contain synthetic cannabinoids, which is regulated under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Any retailers selling the product are urged to contact legal counsel for advice on how to dispose of the products properly. According to the release, the products could be subjected to seizures from police and legal action could be taken against sellers and consumers.
