Three young people who police say used a replica hand gun to rob a southeast grocery store are now in custody. They were rounded up by four Calgary police horses on a routine patrol in the area.
Police say at about 9:40 p.m. on Thursday, an employee of the store, in the 300 block of 17 Avenue S.E., noticed the theft and confronted the youth. Investigators say the suspects pointed what looked to be a hand gun at the employee before leaving the store.
Mounted unit officers, with their horses Vimy, Ortona, Juno and Maverick, responded to the scene. A statement on Friday said they “intercepted the three young males who were running towards a pedestrian pathway in a nearby area.”
Police said two of the boys immediately surrendered, while a third continued to run from officers. He was arrested a short distance away in the 3200 block of 32a Avenue S.E.
Investigators said officers recovered a replica handgun that had been thrown into a nearby backyard.
They said one youth faces one count of pointing a firearm and one count of carrying a concealed weapon.
