Calgary’s GlobalFest kicks off on Tuesday, but what is normally an international celebration will be focusing on Canada for 2017.

Organizers say the change is a way to celebrate Canada 150.

“All of the teams are from across Canada, so we’ve got B.C., we’ve got the prairies, we’ve got Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada,” GlobalFest producer Ken Goosen said. “The Canadian teams are so excited with that opportunity.”

“This is the first time that they’ve ever really done anything like that out here.

“I think that it’s a great way for Canadians to come together,” he added.

Communications co-ordinator Aviva Fialkow said the layout of the festival, which is held at Elliston Park, is also different this year.

“Previously we had a village where all the cultural pavilions were located, now they’re all dispersed throughout the park,” she said.

In addition, a new game is available with various prizes up for grabs, including a trip for two to Mexico.

“We’ve come up with a passport program – it’s a little game called Passport Pursuit. So we want to incentivize people to walk around the park and explore,” Fialkow explained. “The more cultural pavilions they visit, the bigger prize they can win. So they have to answer trivia questions – and then they get stamps.”
