Claude Belobersycky has been with Calgary Emergency Medical Services (EMS) before it was even known as EMS.
For 43 years, Belobersycky has been serving Calgarians, but has decided to retire.
Belobersycky has seen more over the past four decades than most people will see in a lifetime.
Global News was given a unique opportunity to talk to him and to hear him reflect on a long, successful career as an emergency responder in the city.
Belobersycky believes that his career, although mentally and emotionally taxing, was also rewarding due to the attitude and mindset with which he approached each day.
“If you maintain a proper perspective, focus on your patient, treat everyone the same — with respect and dignity — and do your job, you can have a lot of fun.”
He said two things stick out for him when he looks back at the job.
“Treat everyone with respect. A patient is a patient is a patient is the way I always put it, no matter where you pick them up or what walk of life they’re in, and that attitude defines your career. If you have the right attitude, this career can be a long-lasting, fulfilling career.”
After helping countless Calgarians, Belobersycky is ready to focus on being a grandfather.
He says he’s happy he was able to finish his career by doing what he loves, not being cooped up in an office.
“I’m thankful that I was able to finish off my career on the street with the people of Calgary that I can serve and take care of and it’s just been a great way to finish it all off.”
