BC SPCA received 23 calls this weekend of pets left inside hot cars

On the heels of a tragic incident where a dog was left in a hot car and later died in Port Coquitlam, the BC SPCA says they responded to 23 calls of pets being left inside hot cars over the weekend.

“Certainly the temperatures are up, the numbers are up of animals in distress, so we really urge people to leave their pets at home, not leave them in hot cars,” said Lorie Chortyk with the BC SPCA.

She said that so far this summer, they have received close to 600 calls about pets being left in hot cars.

Chortyk said with even hotter weather expected this week, they are asking owners to leave their pets at home.

“Even in the shade with the windows rolled down, it doesn’t take more than a few minutes for an animal to suffer from heat stroke and die.”

She said with August still to come, it’s possible this will be a record-breaking summer for calls of pets left in cars.
