A Calgary man is facing charges in the death of a black Lab allegedly left in a hot car for an extended period of time.
The Calgary Humane Society said they were contacted on Wednesday, July 12 and found the dog dead in the community of Penbrooke Meadows the same day, but believe it was left inside a car on Sunday, July 9 when temperatures had soared as high as 31 C.
“When we attended the dog was removed from the vehicle,” spokesperson Brad Nichols said.
Nichols said it’s unknown if the dog was in the vehicle from Sunday through until Wednesday when they were called.
“We received a call from another agency which alerted us to this situation. We attended and seized the remains,” he said.
The Lab’s cause of death was determined to be hyperthermia.
“In really hot temperatures, 15 minutes can be fatal,” Nichols said.
Jeremy Quaile, 45, is charged under Alberta’s Animal Protection Act.
Nichols said if found guilty, Quaile faces up to a $20,000 fine and a lifetime ban on owning animals.
