RCMP said a teen was walking along a path near KVR Middle School last Friday around 10 p.m. when the assault occurred.

Police said the young man was looking down at his phone when he was suddenly swarmed by at least four — or possibly five — strangers.

Penticton RCMP Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth said these kinds of assaults are particularly disturbing.

“It is hard to understand the motivations of why someone would want to harm another human being without having any justification or excuse in their head,” he said. “If it is simply for the joy or the thrill of a group of people picking on someone else, it is really the worst case of bullying there is.”

The teen suffered injuries to his eye and ear.

Police are asking anyone with any information to contact them.
