The southbound lanes of Highway 63 north of Wandering River were reopened Saturday morning, while the northbound lanes remained closed after a single-vehicle rollover Friday night resulted in a spill of hydrocarbon.
Shortly before 10 p.m. Friday, Boyle RCMP said Highway 63 was shut down at Kilometre 89 in both directions as they investigated a semi-truck rollover and emergency crews worked to clean up and contain the subsequent spill.
Mounties said they believe the southbound semi-truck lost control before rolling into the centre median. No injuries were reported but a natural gas condensate spilled on the road.
They said there was no danger to the public.
In a statement to Global News, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) confirmed it had been notified “that a tank truck carrying natural gas condensate rolled over into a ditch along Highway 63 north of Wandering River” and that it was responding to the spill.
The AER said one of its inspectors visited the site and confirmed the spill was contained to “an area along the highway and ditch.”
According to the AER, “Prairie Storm Transport is the carrier of the condensate, who is working on behalf of Hollow River Transport and its consignor Keyera Energy Corporation.”
On Friday night, the AER said it could not yet confirm the amount of natural gas condensate that was released.
The RCMP were advising drivers to use Highway 881 as an alternate route.
